Use your time effectively.
1. Listen to your classmates’ introductions and choose the one you think is best. (15 min.)
- Go to Courseworks and click Discussion. Then, listen to the 8 introductions listed below your own introduction. Choose the best introduction out of the 8.
- E-mail the name of the person who had the best introduction and the reason you chose the person to your instructor (Nazikian: fn2108@, Park: jp2194@, Hamada: hh2373@, Matsui: kml2168@, Sato: ss903@).
- We will post the best introduction on the class blog.
2. Discuss what makes a good blog in groups of 3-4 people.(10 min.)
At the end of the semester we will have not only teachers but also you and your classmates evaluate each other’s blogs. We will use the results of your discussions today as a basis for deciding the criteria that we will use to evaluate the blogs at the end of the semester.
- Discuss what makes a good blog in groups of 3-4 people.
- Post the result of your discussion in the comment column of the blog. Make sure to include your names or initials with the posting so we know that you have commented.
3. Read the comments made about your own blog. (10 min.)
- Please read the comments made by others about your blog. (People who have already read these comments can skip ahead to step 4 below.)
- If you feel that it is necessary, please respond back to those who have commented on your blog.
4. Comment on the blogs of students from other sections, as well as the blogs of students from other universities. (Comment on at least 2 blogs). (10 min.)
- To view the blogs of students from other sections, look at the list of classmate links on the right side of the page.
- To view the blogs of Japanese Level I students from other countries or other universities, click on the “ともだちをつくろう(Let's make friends)!” link on the right-side of the page. You will see a link for (にほんご1ねんせい) and under this link is a list of other universities. If you click on each of these links you will be brought to a listing of blogs of students from other universities.
- Read the blogs and if you think you would want to be friends with a student, comment on their blog.
- Write at least one sentence in Japanese that includes one Japanese vocabulary word that we have learned.
- Record which blogs you have commented on by writing them down on a comment sheet. (See "How to Submit Comment Sheet" under にほんごのクラス(class) on the right side of the page.) In the end of the semester your classmates will look at this comment sheet when they evaluate your blog.
5. Post your blog entry in Japanese. (15 min.)
- Write a blog entry in Japanese.
- If you have no idea what to write, you can write about what you did on the weekend or your daily schedule.

We think that a good blog must have compelling graphic elements and regular updates. We also think that a good blog has posts of various subjects and responds to comments.

Peng-san and I think that a good blog has to have a good topic or theme; we also think that it has to be easy on the eyes, with no graphic elements that disrupt the text, but at the same time, an interesting background. Pictures are helpful as well, as is coherence; try to write in full paragraphs rather than in bullet points, for instance. Overall then, clarity and aesthetics, we think, are key.

We believe that a good blog should consist of topics that people are interested in such as one's daily life, weekend excursion, hobbies, unique things you like/enjoy. For this blog, the blogger should try to use Japanese as much as possible and update regularly.

A good blog should be clear, should use the grammar structure and vocabulary we learned. It would be better if it is interesting.
Tam, Moy and Mai
Use the grammar and vocab that we have studied in class. Make it as coherent and interesting as possible, i.e. include some pictures, videos, links, etc. Not too long, but not too short. No dissertations please. Write something engaging that people can respond/comment to.

We have eight general points for the creation of a spectacular blog:
1. Visuals/pictures of people/videos
2. Links
3. Appealing wallpapers that's not a template
4. New Content that's regularly updated.
5. Controversial information that borders on irreverence that sparks the interest of other students. For instance, creative fictional scenarios and characters. Don't self-reference language learning. (Example: Pretend you are a single, 30 year old student at Kansai University)
6. Be sincere but don't write a composition that involves breakfast and libraries.
7. Mix Japanese and English. Have English titles to attract students and then post body paragraphs in Japanese.
8. A good name. "A Student Blog that the Entire World Can Indulge in"

1. Pictures (and other media) make the blog entertaining for others.
2. Some sort of continuity in the theme/topic of the blog.
3. Trying to use as much Japanese as possible, not always playing it safe with what we have learned in class.
4. Regular posting schedule.
5. Interacting with other blogs--especially those in your blog comment group.

We think that a good blog should be:
1) frequently updated;
2) personal and honest in nature;
3) aware of the language level of one's readers (or include translation if one insists on using advanced vocabulary);
4) legible (ex. the background should not be the same or similar color of the text).

- Posts that others would find interesting, not too much text
- Updated regularly
- Ability to scroll through quickly (lots of pictures, videos, etc.)
- In this case, using whatever Japanese is possible. The posts shouldn't all be in English
- Should relate to Japan/Japanese culture at least a little
- Lots of comments can indicate a good blog

What makes a good blog?

A good blog has to be easily read: not too many shiny bright colors.
It should be updated regularly, and it should have increasing amounts of Japanese (trying to put more, anyway).
A good blog has responses to comments when they ask questions.
It should have fun and interesting stuff, especially stuff relevant to the class (like grammar videos).
No offensive words or posts.
And it should look nice. Try to alternate between Japanese and English (kanji are hard) and try to post at the class' level so we can all read your posts!
- Peter, Kendy and Cherry
- presence of media elements (pictures/video/music)
- presence of new words
- posting frequency
- relevance of the posts to the course
- general design of the blog (esthetically appealing)
- english translation when relevant

What constitutes a good blog:
- interesting media (pics, video) that leads to interesting replies and comments
- interesting topics that lead to good discussions
- the use of relevant grammar that we've learned in class instead of just using google translate, where the rest of the class can't really follow.
- an interesting layout and design that captures readers' attention.
- actual post layout design (separating paragraphs, etc.)
We believe a good blog has:
1. Regular Updates
2. Embedded videos and photos
3. Nothing too explicit or controversial
4. some degree of humor
5. Japanese cultural references
